Online High School Coursework Through APEX

The online learning center uses the program Apex to help students who are in need of credit recovery in core courses, looking for a second language option, or whose schedules are unique to the average school day.

Apex offers courses in the areas of English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Languages (French I & II and Spanish I - III), and other electives. The course currently being offered through APEX are below along with course descriptions:

English
  • English 1 (O'Neill): Examines various selections of fiction and non-fiction and examining text.
  • English 2 (O'Neill): Focus is primarily on the writing process: persuasive, expository and narrative.
  • English 3 (O'Neill): Examine the belief systems, events and literature that have shaped the US, starting with literature created around America's independence through Transcendentalists.
  • Creative Writing (O'Neill): Focuses on exploring short fiction and poetry and creating a portfolio of fiction writing.
  • British Literature (O'Neill): Focuses on the studying of fiction and building writing skills.
Math
  • Math Foundations 1 (Schultz): Focus on foundational concepts to prepare students for Algebra 1.
  • Math Foundations 2 (Schultz): This course continues to focus on foundational concepts to prepare students for Algebra 1/Geometry.
  • Algebra 1 (Schultz): Focus on linear, quadratic, and exponential relationships.
  • Geometry (Schultz): Focus is on geometric relationships and formulating math arguments.
  • Algebra 2 (Pargeon): Examines advanced functions, develop strong conceptual grasp of expressions that define those functions.
  • Integrated Math (Schultz): Apply real world financial literacy, personal finance and business concepts.
Science
  • Earth Science (Smith): Examine Earth's composition, structure, processes and history; its atmosphere, freshwater, and oceans; and its environment in space.
  • Biology (Smith): Examines the basic biological concepts and models.
  • Chemistry (Smith): Emphasizes students' understanding of foundational chemistry concepts.
  • Environmental Science (Smith): Examine the biological, physical, and sociological principles related to the environment on Earth
  • Physics (Smith):
  • Emphasizes students' understanding of foundational physics concepts.
Social Studies
  • US History (Dengler): Examines the nation's history from the pre-colonial period to the present.
  • World History (Lyons): Examine human culture, governments, economic systems and social structures across time societies.
  • American Gov't (Dengler): Examine the history, principles, and function of the US political system.
  • World Cultures (Lyons): Explore geographic features, human relationships, political/social structures, economies, science/tech, and arts have influence and developed life in countries around the world.
  • Navigating World History (Dengler): Examines the nation's history from the end of the Civil War to the present.
Health
  • Health (Carlson): Helps students develop knowledge, attitudes and essential skills in serval health-related subjects.
Financial Literacy
  • Financial Literacy (Gartman): Helps students develop skills that connect life and career to financial goals.
World Language
  • French 1: Teaches students to greet people, describe family and friends, talk about hobbies, etc. Each lesson includes: vocab, grammar and culture.
  • French 2: Focuses more on communicating about a variety of topics, both formally and informally. Each lesson includes: vocab, grammar and culture.
  • Spanish 1(Stockman): Teaches students to greet people, describe family and friends, talk about hobbies, etc. Each lesson includes: vocab, grammar and culture.
  • Spanish 2 (Stockman): Focuses more on communicating about a variety of topics, both formally and informally. Each lesson includes: vocab, grammar and culture.
Electives
  • Computer Applications (Gartman): Provides an introduction to software applications.

Concurrent Online Coursework
Online Center is where students take their online college courses (Iowa Central Community College OR Iowa Valley Community College) as well. Concurrent enrollment is dictated by Senior Year Plus (SYP) through the state of Iowa.

Requirements: Any set forth by the post secondary institution, the high school institution, and if there are any proficiency requirements that need to be met.
