Floriculture Tips

General

  • Perennial plants are likely to come back the spring after they’re planted, so if you love them, let them grow!

  • Plants flourish with rain water as opposed to tap water, so consider leaving out your watering can during a storm to water pots or indoor plants

  • If the weather has been particularly dry, hot, and/or sunny, you may want to cover sensitive plants with a thin white cloth, such as muslin.

  • Fertilizer can be used to boost growth and blooms. Use once a month, and be sure you have the right fertilizer for your purpose

Floriculture

Outdoor

  • Warm colors such as oranges, yellows, and reds will go well together, while purple, scarlets and dark greens go well together

  • Pops of colors compliment and balance darker tones and overwhelming amounts of one color

  • Use varying sizes of plants for levels and added interest

    • Check sizes to make sure larger plants will not smother others

  • Space out perennials and have annuals in between, so you have the ability to switch up colors and styles yearly, without replacing everything

  • Mulch around plants deters weeds and can provide a more professional look

  • If you have issues with bugs, a mixture of dish soap and water sprayed lightly over the leaves may help prevent attacks

  • Look for how much sun a plant needs

    • Part shade can survive in full sun but will need much more water

Indoor

  • Succulents/Cacti

    • Great for indoors! Add a natural touch to interior decor

    • Some succulents nearly double in size when taken care of, so be careful when spacing

    • Most cacti will stay the same size

    • Cacti need watered with a tablespoon of water a week

    • Succulents should be watered every other day

    • For both, mix ½ sand and ½ soil for ideal drainage
