For December professional development, secondary staff at Montezuma Community School District got to take a field trip to three local manufacturing sites to learn more about what those businesses do along with how they could work to shape future employees.
The secondary staff visited DeJong Manufacturing in New Sharon, IA, Co-Line Manufacturing in Lynnville, IA, and Colewell Automation in Montezuma, IA. At each site, staff members received a tour of the facilities and got to see the processes in work at each location, asking questions along the way. It is clear that manufacturing isn’t what it used to be; it has evolved into work that incorporates the latest technology while still emphasizing the need for skilled workers.
The overall message is that these location are looking for employees who are willing to learn and that can adapt. The employability soft skills are also important-communication (in-person and written), time management (respecting stop/start times), and problem solving. At DeJong and Co-line, they can teach the skills needed in the different areas which can include technology/robotics work, tool and die or even office duties. At Colewell Automation, they do seek individuals who do have background in technology, but they are looking to open up an entry level position to get people interested in the field of robotics.
Colewell Automation has hosted classes through Iowa Valley Community College and Co-line does a lot of work with DMACC in the area of tool and die. At all three locations, they are always looking for those interested in creating a career path within this community, showing you don’t have to look too far to find wonderful opportunities.
The staff would like to thank Mr. Gartman for putting together the chance to visit these locations, along with the sites for hosting. It was a great way to connect with local businesses and see the availability of career opportunities in our area!
