HOF Class of 2018 Announced

MHS Hall of Fame Class of 2018

Montezuma Athletics is pleased to announce the induction of the Class of 2018 into the MHS Athletics Hall of Fame.  The third installment of the Hall of Fame boasts an abundance of talent in the athletics arena and on the sideline.  Famed 6-on-6 all-star Carolyn (Little) Simmons (’69) headlines another strong class of Brave and Bravette athletes and coaches.  Joining Carolyn in this year’s class is Scott Rabenold (’93), the late Johnny Thurber (’49), Laine (Lundy) Korver (’76), and Luke Thompson (’07).   Being inducted with the class of 2018 individual athletes are Coach Tony DiCecco and Coach Ron Willrich.  Rounding out this years HOF class is the 1972 State Runner-Up Boys Track Team.

The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place during the Montezuma Sesquicentenial at MHS on Saturday, August 25^th at 4:00p.m. 

Carolyn (Little) Simmons, 1969

Simmons was a defensive ace for the Bravettes throughout her career with the blue and white.  A four-year starter, Simmons, led the Bravettes to three conference championships, two district championships, and the 1969 State Championship.  Her defensive prowess garnered Carolyn multiple all-conference and all-state selections as well as a selection on the 1969 All-Tournament Team. 

Scott Rabenold, 1993

Rabenold was a multi-sport standout in while representing the Braves in the early 90’s.  As a freshman, he was part of the 1990 State Championship Boys Basketball Team.  By the time his basketball career as a Brave was finished, he would be 4^th on the all-time career scoring list.  Scott also set school records for Career Assists, Career 3-Point Field Goals Made, and Season Free Throw and 3-Point Field Goal Percentage.  Rabenold was also an All-State Quarterback for the Braves his Senior Season.

Laine (Lundy) Korver, 1976

Laine (Lundy) Korver was one of the most prolific scorers to grace the halls of MHS.   Highlighted by a senior season where she scored over 1,000 points and set the single-game scoring mark at 73 points, Korver, finished with 1,861 points which was good for second best in school history at the time.  Laine led her team to a Conference Championship and District Runner-Up finish her Senior season as the Bravettes finished with a 21-5 record.  She was also the starting Shortstop for the very first Bravettes Softball team in the fall of 1975.

Johnny Thurber, 1949

Thurber was the starting Quarterback for the 1947 and 1948 Braves football teams that both went undefeated and hold many team record still today.  He was selected to the 1948 All-State Football Team his senior season by the Des Moines Register.  As a member of the basketball team, Johnny was the point guard for the Braves state tournament team.  He went on to play for the Iowa State Freshman Football team and then to serve his country as a member of the Navy.

Luke Thompson, 2007

Thompson is one of the Braves most decorated track athletes.   As a high jumper, he set the school record on his way to a State Championship his senior season.  He also placed 5^th, 3^rd, and 2^nd in the event the first three seasons of his career.  He also set the school record in the 110 Meter High Hurdles his senior season, finishing 2^nd at the State Meet.  Luke was a large part of the 2006 Football Team that finished as State Runner-Up.  On the diamond, Thompson was an All-State Shortstop hitting 10 home runs his senior season as well as a three-year starter on the hardwood.

Coach Tony DiCecco

Tony DiCecco coached Girls Basketball, Girls Track, and Softball during his 16-year career at Montezuma.  As the head man for the Bravettes Basketball Team, Tony compiled a record of 306 wins to only 69 losses. Tony’s Bravettes won 8 conference championships and earned two state tournament berths. 

Coach Ron Willrich

Ron Willrich is a longtime coach for both the Braves and Bravettes.  As a basketball, football, baseball and track coach, Ron was part of multiple conference and district championships, multiple state tournament teams, and two state championship teams.
